Is Your Choice
of Fonts Important?

When
designing a logo, header for your
website, a brochure, or even an
advertisement whether it's
printed or an inline ad on your website,
is your choice of font a fundamental
part of the design?
When fonts
are used as part of the design, the font
should match or support the design and
style you have in mind. Graphic
designers are always creating new fonts
- so, the choice of fonts are just
getting better. Here are just a few
categories found on dafont.com:
Fancy (Cartoons, Comics, Groovy,
Old School, Curly, Western, Eroded,
Distorted, Destroy, Horror, Fire,
Decorative, Typwriter, Stencil,
Retro, Grids)
Foreign (Chinese, Japanese,
Arabic, Mexican Roman, Greek,
Russian)
Techno (Square, LCD, Sci-fi)
Gothic (Medieval, Modern,
Celtic)
Basic (Sans serif, Serif,
Fixed Width)
Script (Calligraphy, School,
Handwritten, Brush, Trash, Graffiti)
Dingbats (Alien, Animals,
Asian, Ancient, Runes, Elvish,
Esoteric, Fantastic, Horror, Games,
Bar Code, Nature, Sport Heads, Kids,
TV, Movie, Logos, Sexy, Army, Music)
Holiday (Valentine, Easter,
Halloween, Christmas)
Each one of
these fonts has their place in design
layouts. Obviously, we don't want to put
a medieval design on a design that is
contemporary unless we are trying to
make some sort of strange statement.
Typically though, fonts should be
compatible with the look and feel of
what you are designing.
Typography
is a study onto itself and making sure
you have used the correct font, color
application, size, and effect is a
personal judgment call. There is no one
solution to any one design - and now,
since there are so many fonts available
to us, it is worth your time to explore
all the possibilities.
